About Us

Charles McEwuen

Founder & Owner

In 1973, Charles “Charlie” McEwuen, while serving with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, taught himself to make leather goods with what he had available at the post craft store. When he returned in 1976, Charlie took this craft and turned it into a business. Opening in a six foot storefront that was no more than a walled-off alleyway on Walnut Street, Tanner’s Alley Leather Design Studio was born. For the 46 years since then, Charlie has been designing, creating, and repairing leather goods for the Morgantown Community.

As the quality of his products became recognized across the community and nation, Charlie had the privilege of being able to find and employ other like minded team members to help fulfill the needs of the growing business.

Our Craft

Our Craft

from Pen and Paper to the Bench

When we sit down to design our products, we are mindful of the customers we create them for. From simple, every day designs to singular showstoppers. Sometimes we discover leather that is so interesting and unique that we just have to have it and the design process starts there. We take great care in selecting the best leather with the correct thickness, feel, texture, and firmness. No two leathers are the same, and we are dedicated to using the right leather for the correct application.

Our designs are all made in studio, from concept, to bench, directly to your personal collection. Making our product in store allows us to manage quality from conception to execution.
